DeAnn Acton, BFA, MA LMFT
BFA in Studio Art: '91 University of Texas at Austin
MFT-Art Therapy: '98 Notre Dame de Namur University, Belmont CA
I have over sixteen years experience working with children, teens, families, and adults in a variety of settings, including schools, residential treatment centers, juvenile detention centers, and hospitals. Using art, play, sand tray, and talk therapy, I work collaboratively with children and adults to make positive changes in their lives. I also have extensive training in dialectical behavior therapy, an evidence based form of cognitive therapy that helps young people (and older people too!) develop positive coping strategies, manage overwhelming emotions, learn mindfulness techniques, and develop skills to becoming more effective in their interpersonal relationships.
I am especially interested in working with gifted children, teens and adults, who often times possess both an emotional and intellectual intensity that can make life overwhelming.
Aside from her therapeutic work, Deann has also been an educator in two university Masters Level Counseling Programs, Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California and Dominican University in San Rafael, California. She has written for the American Art Therapy Association’s Journal and published a chapter in the book, “Art, Angst, and Trauma: Right Brain Interventions with Developmental Issues.”
